EDUCATION EFFORTS - BALANCED EDUCATION

A balanced education is the need of the hour irrespective of caste, creed, gender and religion. In the modern world, religious education is considered personal and bifurcated from primary to university level. All surveys and statistics internationally base their findings only on formal education, sidelining religious/spiritual education. Unless religious (acquiring knowledge of Creator) and moral education is imparted in any school of learning, humanity will suffer in all aspects of life.

Hidayah Foundation conducted a Muslim Educational Conference in 2010 involving experts and managements of all Muslim managed schools of the region. Since then a meeting is held every year.

For over a decade, Hidayah Foundation has observed that our support initiatives such as providing scholarship, study materials have benefitted only a few academically strong students. The majority of the students who are weak both academically and financially are not interested in higher education due to their home environment. They drop out of school with the hope of finding employment, to help their families with a secondary source of income. It is observed that around 60%, dropouts are between 8th and 10th grade. 50% of those who have reached 10th too, fail in the board examinations.

Hidayah Foundation has been focusing on children’s education and consistently conducting workshops on improving study skills while providing time to time tuitions for weak students in government schools.

HIDAYAH ACAMDEMY

Language helps in seeking knowledge. Correct learning of a language as a medium of instruction will lead to the right understanding of the essence of the subject. Unfortunately, Muslims in different parts of the world are deprived of understanding the true essence, since they do not know the Arabic language. Though a child learns 2-3 languages on average at the primary level of schooling, including the medium of instruction, the Arabic language is an exception. This has resulted in large scale dependence on translations.

Hidayah Foundation’s think-tank after going through this complex issue and ground realities, started with Hidayah Arabic language Institute to train teachers. So far almost 300 teachers have been trained and they are teaching in different schools, with access to nearly 25,000 students

The strength of a community is determined by the combined strength of individual families constituting it. It is evident that due to modern lifestyles and straying from religious values, various types of stress and family conflicts have arisen in the community. Marital discord, higher rates of depression in children and teenagers, divorce, domestic violence and general anxiety have risen in recent times. There is a desperate need for Islamic counselling experts to tackle such serious issues revolving around the community.

Citing the need for trained counsellors, a course clubbing the structured Islamic way of life and general counselling was launched by Hidayah Foundation. About 20 students have completed a one-year diploma-based course on Islamic Counselling.

Career Guidance

Often students find themselves in a state of dilemma before making an important decision in their lives. For students who find it difficult to realize the right career meant for them; a career guide helps them to sort out this confusion. There are infinite career options available to choose from, and without an expert’s proper guidance, one might stick to the few irrelevant ones that his/her friends/relatives ask him/her to pursue.

RURAL INITIATIVE

In the past, Hidayah Foundation has reached out to hundreds of schools in rural areas and guided thousands of students, closely studying the challenges faced by rural students. It is observed that the majority of the students are unaware of the careers existing and hardly have any role models around them to influence their choice of relevant careers for themselves. Many of the rural students end up dreaming of becoming drivers or cleaners or other menial jobs due to the influence of only such people surrounding them.

URBAN INITIATIVE

Through initiatives related to goals and careers, Hidayah Foundation has counselled around 5,000 students from different places, belonging to different streams of Science, Commerce and Arts, online as well as offline. The Foundation is linked to almost all the colleges of higher studies for direct admissions and has guided students along with parents by providing information of institutions, scholarship modules and guidance on competitive exams such as NEET & CET.

Hidayah Foundation has conducted a super 40 programme, bringing together meritorious students of the region.

Value & Skills

When surveyed, it was evident that even the skill levels of meritorious students’ too were at a low. One of the core reasons is that the present education system does not focus on core skill development. There are efforts to impart skills at different levels. HF has developed a researched structure to identify the opportunities and challenges at different levels of a student’s career. They have also developed the need and stage where exactly skills and values need to be nurtured based on this student empowerment structure.

Raising our children with the right value system ensures that the positive change will be passed to the next generation. Parents, especially women, need support. This program is to help parents develop a systematic plan, from birth till maturity for their children, by highlighting and finding solutions to major problems. Society generally tends to oppose what Muslim children are learning at home. As a result of this conflict, children are fighting a psychological battle in their minds. More number of girls are getting educated today, but the purpose of education seems to be lost, by the cyber glitter they are being exposed to. This has caused an imbalance in the family set up, leading to unethical behaviour and more family break-ups. A debate is essential in understanding the opportunities and challenges of education.
