Central and State governments have introduced several programmes that create jobs and those that help rural populations generate income in the field of agriculture, food processing and handicrafts as home /small scale industries. But this is yet to reach many remote rural areas. In the districts of Coastal Karnataka Beedi rolling is the most popular home industry and over the years has become a tradition for many BPL and even middle-class families. Although it is a hassle-free breadwinner for poor masses, it is one of the most hazardous silent killers (handling and consuming tobacco). This is an undeniable fact that there are jobs for all those who are able and willing to work. Women are mostly housewives responsible for the total welfare of the family, and either they are semi-skilled or unskilled. To help them earn their livelihood, careful study of their lifestyle is needed.
Hidayah Foundation launched several home-based industries including candle making, eco-friendly disposable plates production and tailoring.
